"...why would a straight woman want to shoot naked women in sexual situations?"
1. Who is Liz Mares and what are her most important goals in life?
I’m just a simple girl; really, I just want fame, fortune and an entourage of worthy followers clambering at my feet. Is that too much to ask for? Nah, I don’t need all that; I’ll just take the fortune. Kidding!
I am, however, a minimalist, a voyeur and an experimentalist. I’m not looking for anything fancy out of life, I just want to do what I do, everyday, and be happy. It sounds cliché, but it’s true. I just hope, eventually, my work will be grand enough to showcase on a larger exhibition scale. That is my lifelong goal, actually, and the one I’m working hardest to achieve.
2. What do you search for in the field of erotic art and photography? Is there any special interest or fetish you have?
I search for raw emotions. Namely the freedom one feels when they’re completely letting go. When I look at an image, either my own or someone else’s, I want to feel a tightening in my chest, a tightening that’s telling me “You shouldn’t be looking at this. It’s naughty. Good girls don’t look at such things.” That’s when I know it’s true art.
I have a “thing” with masking identities. I suppose you could call it a fetish. I like to pretend and play make believe. I’m a dreamer and tend to cover the faces of my subjects. Why? I want them to be about more then just faces. I want them to be entities.
And on a personal Fetish note: Men that smoke sexy. Yum! (Nasty habit, I know, but I'm no saint).
3. Do you see any difference with female models when they pose for a female photographer like you and are they talking about this with you during a shooting?
A lot of the models that I have worked with had never worked with a female photographer before, so the nervousness was to be expected, I think mainly because they’re wondering about my sexual orientation. I mean, why would a straight woman want to shoot naked women in (sometimes) sexual situations? I’ve talked with a few of them about it, I tell them I am straight and I shoot mostly woman... because... well... women are so much prettier to look at! Also because a lot of my series works have feminist overtones. Plus, I’m a goofball, so I think they warm up to me pretty quickly.
4. Tell us a little bit more about your first photo book 'Masque' and the story behind this project?
Masque took me almost 2 years to create and although it is a short book, it was the most challenging. It is a very personal story because it is a pictorial essay about myself. About learning to let go of my fears and inhibitions, allowing myself to delve into the realm of, what some might consider, the taboo.
Masque has been the steppingstone for all my other works. Allowing for each new series to become more daring and erotic.
5. Finally... what are your 3 favorite four letter words?
Pain, Lust, and the mother of all dirty words…Love.
What can I say, I’m a romantic.
Many thanks to Liz Mares for this little interview!
